I envision you guys as always being on a bus, not a van that maxes out at 45 mph.Ī: Oh my God, that was hysterical. Q: The story of your first touring van was amusing. When I'm there he plays "Open Arms" on the accordion for me. Q: Have you visited the Gabbanelli showroom in Houston?Ī: I have not. Things like "Hava Negila," songs that light up a room. So I had a different foundation of music that I learned on accordion. And that's where he learned the folk songs that ended up influencing what he did later on. I remember he described in his book growing up playing bass in the park with these old guys. I brought it on the road and the guys on the bus went nuts for it. Most gave up on it, but he's still going strong. He's one of the few accordion repair guys in the country. But I bought a used accordion off the guy. So I have to ship it off to get it working. But I found an old guy who can fix it in New York. Q: Do you still have that first $400 Galanti accordion your parents bought you?Ī: I do, I still have it. So you find out these surprises later in life. I guess they hid the Russian roots because of the Cold War. A cousin from Arkansas who played violin. But there were all these family members who played music, so it wasn't completely alien. I came to find years later they were Russian. They told me as a boy that we were Czech. But my father is actually from Russian descent. It was interesting to read about your grandfather, a mountain fiddler in Arkansas.Ī: Yeah, it's funny, everybody thinks we're all from the Bay Area.
